Később a Smithsonian Institution munkatársa lett, ahol herbáriumi anyagok feldolgozásával és növényrendszertannal foglalkozott. <br /> <br /> Nathaniel Lord Brittonnal együttműködve részt vett számos trópusi és észak-amerikai növénycsoport feldolgozásában, de legnagyobb hatását a kaktuszok rendszertanában érte el.<br /> <br /> == Jelentősége a kaktuszkutatásban ==<br /> <br /> Rose a kaktuszok modern tudományos feldolgozásának egyik kulcsszereplője volt.
