A név eredete, etimológia

A nemzetségnév a görög thele (mellbimbó, szemölcs) és a latin cactus szavak összetételéből származik. Jelentése: „szemölcsös kaktusz”, amely a nemzetségbe tartozó fajok jellegzetes, szemölcs alakú tuberkulumaivá (szemölcseivé) alakult bordáira utal.

Első leírása: Karl Moritz Schumann írta le először mint alnemzetséget (Echinocactus subg. Thelocactus) 1898-ban a Gesamtbeschreibung der Kakteen című művében.

Alaktani, morfológiai jellemzők

Vegetatív test

Hajtás, szár

Kistermetű növényekből álló nemzetség, amelyek lehetnek magányosak vagy csoportképzők (caespitosus). Alakjuk gömbölyded, a csúcsuknál benyomott, vagy kúpos, illetve hengeres formájú. Magasságuk nem haladja meg a 40 cm-t, átmérőjük pedig a 20 cm-t.

Bordák, szemölcsök, axillák, areolák, tövisek

A bordák gyakran nem egyértelműek, de a szemölcsök (tuberkulumok) általában jól meghatározottak, kerekítettek vagy kúposak. Az areolák a szemölcsök csúcsán helyezkednek el, a szemölcsök néha megnyúltak és barázdáltak; nektármirigyek (glandula) jelen lehetnek vagy hiányozhatnak. A tövisek általában egyenesek, méretükben és színükben változatosak. A középtövisek hosszabbak és robusztusabbak, mint a peremtövisek.

Generatív test

Virág

Nappal nyíló (diurnus) virágok, amelyek a szárak csúcsán jelennek meg. Tölcsér alakúak, pikkelyes virágtubussal rendelkeznek. Színük fehér, sárga, rózsaszíntől a magentáig terjed, ritkán narancssárga vagy piros. Rovarok porozzák be őket.

Termés

A termések zöldesek vagy vörösesek, pikkelyesek, érett állapotban az alapjuknál nyílnak fel (dehiscentia) egy póruson keresztül, ahol a magok szabadon távoznak. A virágmaradványok tartósan megmaradnak a termésen.

Magja: Fekete, körte alakú, süllyedt bazális köldökkel (hilum). A testa sejtjei táblásak, domborúak vagy kúposak, simák vagy szemölcsösek. Terjedésük hangyák által (myrmecochoria), vagy valószínűleg a víz segítségével (hydrochoria) történik.

Elterjedés és élőhely

Földrajzi elterjedés: Az Amerikai Egyesült Államok déli része (Új-Mexikó, Texas) és Észak-Mexikó (Coahuila, Durango, Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas) területein terjedt el.
Élőhely, éghajlat, életmód, növénytársulás: Igen változatos ásványi aljzatokon, hordalékos talajokon nő, gyakran füvek között, sziklák között, köves, homokos, szilíciumos talajokon, mészkövön (pl. T. buekii subsp. matudae) vagy gipszen (pl. T. rinconensis subsp. nidulans, páfrányok és korpafüvek között). Jellemző élőhelye a matorral (tövises bozótos), de előfordul hegyekben, fenyőerdőkben is, kaktuszokból, broméliákból és más pozsgásokból álló növénytársulások tagjaként, 50 m és 2700 m közötti tengerszint feletti magasságban.

Kultúrában tartás

A nemzetség fajai népszerűek a gyűjtők körében dekoratív megjelenésük és látványos virágaik miatt. Általában jó vízelvezetésű talajt és napos fekvést igényelnek.

Taxonómia és filogenetika

A J. M. de Vos és munkatársai által végzett “Phylogenomics and classification of Cactaceae based on hundreds of nuclear genes (2025)” kutatás alapján a Thelocactus nemzetség a Cacteae tribusz tagja. A filogenetikai vizsgálatok megerősítették a nemzetség monofiletikus jellegét és pontosabb elhelyezkedését a kaktuszfélék családfáján a magDNS-vizsgálatok segítségével.

Egyéb

A magok terjedését gyakran hangyák segítik (mirmekochória). A nemzetség számos faja természetvédelmi jelentőséggel bír az élőhelyek pusztulása miatt.
